MASON CITY — Shooting lights out compared to the regular season loss to Mason City Newman, the St. Ansgar girls basketball team handed the Knights a 59-40 season-ending loss in the Class 1A Region 6 quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 13.

Kinsey Anderson, who led all scorers with 17, had 10 points by halftime, simply driving in and hitting little jump shots over the Newman defense.

“I’ve always liked that little floater,” Anderson said. “I knew with Amelia being a good outside shooter, they were going to have the lane open, so taking it in, maybe drawing a foul or being able to kick it it out and dish it out to someone or shoot it myself. Driving opens it up for anything, really.”

She also had a game-high five assists, Amelia Porisch adding 12 points and Kenzie Peterson 10.

The Saints were 9-of-18 from the free throw line as the Lady Knights committed 19 fouls, and a pair of players fouled out and another finished with four.

“We could have hit a lot more,” St. Ansgar coach Scott Cakerice said. “We made it to the free throw line a lot tonight. It hasn’t been a strength of ours all year, but it wasn’t an Achilles Heel, either, which is good. We attacked the basket tonight, which is huge.”
