Saints end busy week 1-1 at Cedar River Classic

ST. ANSGAR — Capping a busy week of ups and downs, the Saint baseball team had their own share of ups and downs against Charles City and fifth-ranked 1A team Kee, Lansing at their own Cedar River Classic tournament on Saturday, June 12.
Freshman Gus Walk was solid in 6 1/3 innings against the Comets, benefiting from a three-pitch second inning, allowing seven hits and only one walk and striking out four to earn the win on the hill. He had support from eight hits, four of them by Ryan Hackbart, who drove in four.
The Kee-Hawks showed they were worthy of their ranking in the tournament, posting a 10-0, five-inning win over the Comets and then wreaking havoc on the base paths with a 10-0, six-inning victory over the home team in the finale.
It was a long day, long week for coach Devin Schwiesow’s Saints in which they finished 3-4 overall.
“Young team,” coach Schwiesow said. “No seniors and only four juniors, and with young kids we knew we’d have our ups and downs, and we did this week. At times we played really good baseball, but we’re out of gas, obviously against a really good team. When you’re out of gas and no enthusiasm . . . I thought (Hunter) Hillman pitched pretty good. I thought Carsen didn’t have his best, but pitched well.
“Yeah, ups and downs this week, and we’ll continue to get better.”
