Saints command performance over Lake Mills
By Kristi Nixon
ST. ANSGAR — Much like the first time the top-ranked St. Ansgar football team played Lake Mills a few weeks ago, coach Drew Clevenger’s team dominated the Bulldogs.
This time, with continuing the season at stake, the Saints (10-0) shut out the visitors, 33-0, on the coldest night of the season so far.
“Kind of similar games, I think,” coach Clevenger said. “I was impressed with Lake Mills. Their kids are physical up front. I thought they had a good game plan against us, but awfully proud of our kids how well we executed. It wasn’t a perfect game on our part, but up front I thought we did a good job battling and outside of a couple of times putting the ball on the ground, we were pretty solid.”
With senior backs Connor King and Christian Michels limited against the Bulldogs, but most importantly playing, junior Tyson Kline stepped up big, bearing the load of carries with 18 for 112 yards and a touchdown, including a couple of runs in which he took a couple of tacklers with him for several yards before he could be taken down.
“It’s a big role to fill,” Kline said. “Those guys are heck of athletes, they do a really good job and they’re really good leaders, too. They’ve helped me along the way, along with the quarterback, Jayce Schwiesow – he’s helped me a lot. Our line helped so much today. They did their job and did it well.”
Coach Clevenger assessed the health of both King and C. Michels, the latter not able to play in the opening playoff game the week before.
“They are tough kids – they’ll keep improving,” he said. “We were happy to have them on the field tonight.”
