Saints bust the Broncos

ST. ANSGAR — St. Ansgar used all three facets of its game to roll over a young Belmond-Klemme squad and improved to 4-0 with a dominant 61-6 homecoming victory on Friday, Sept. 15.
The Class A No. 2 (Associated Press) Saints forced four Bronco turnovers, set themselves up well with punt and kick returns and offensively scored at will to set up a battle of unbeatens this Friday night.
“We wanted to keep getting better, number one, and we had a good week of practice overall,” coach Drew Clevenger said. “And, I wanted to come out here and make sure we put our best foot forward. I think we did that.”
Defensively, the Saints intercepted B-K freshman quarterback Brody Heifner three times – all in the first half – scoring quickly twice and the third coming to end the half. More than half of the Broncos starters were either freshmen or sophomores, including their skill positions.
It showed as B-K had more they could handle with an experienced Saint squad that could go to No. 1 after the top-ranked team in Class A, Lynnville-Sully, lost to fourth-ranked Madrid, also on Friday night.
“It’s tough when you are playing young kids,” coach Clevenger said. “I’ve been there at different times in my career. The only thing you can do is keep kids engaged and get small victory, and hopefully they do that with their program.”
