Riceville setter gets mark on Senior Night
By Kristi Nixon
RICEVILLE — Riceville volleyball senior setter Morgan Fair had no clue she was closing in on the school season record for assists, and her coach, Missy McElroy, liked it that way.
Surprises abounded on an emotional Senior Night for the Wildcats as they swept Clarksville in a hard-fought Iowa Star North Conference tilt.
First, Riceville softball coach Andrea Bauer was awarded the You Can Award from the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, nominated and presented to her by Clarksville coach Katie Burman. Bauer later said she was indeed surprised, but in a good way, which is rare.
And, after the second set, the announcement was made that Fair, who was honored before the match both with homecoming queen and Senior Night ceremonies, had just surpassed the school mark for assists in a season.
She said she didn’t even know what the record was after the team’s 29-27, 25-22, 25-12 sweep of the Indians.
“I had no idea,” Fair said. “I was surprised. I just play – I guess I don’t pay attention to stats. No idea (what the record was), I don’t know what to tell you.”
Coach McElroy added, “Coaching in the past I’ve learned that if you tell somebody something, they’ll struggle. So, I have a couple of other players, I’m keeping an extra ball for them. We’re hoping we can get a couple more career records here for volleyball. This was a season record, yes, but hopefully she’ll get the career record, too….”
