CLARKSVILLE — Riceville finished 10th out of 10 teams at the Iowa Star Conference boys’ golf meet at Clarksville’s CARD course on a rare comfortable spring day held on Wednesday, May 4.

The Wildcats were just one stroke back of Baxter to finish last with 520.

Following rain all day the previous day, the course had very soggy conditions with players hitting out of standing water.

Despite the results, Riceville coach Sal Gomez said he’s seen improvement from his young team with limited time outdoors this season.

“Tyler Sprung has improved a lot so far,” Gomez said. “Carver Hale, Jonah Knode as well and Brian Grimm, as well. Those are four guys who are coming back next year, so I look for them to get lower scores next year.

“Tough conditions, for sure, have to play through it.”

The overall meet medalist was Don Bosco’s Ty Purdy with 74, leading the Dons to the team title with a score of 339. The medalist runner-up was North Tama’s Trent Whitmore with an 80. The RedHawks were the team runner-up as they had three of the four low scores for all-conference honors.
