DES MOINES — Almost seven months to the day in which Osage senior Ericka Power injured her arm at the opening wrestling tournament of the 2023-24 winter season, the Green Devil left her mark in the field during the state track & field meet.

Osage’s Ericka Power gets a hug from her sister, Kendall Power, directly after Ericka set a new PR and broke the school record at 121-0 on her final discus attempt in the Class 2A state field on Friday, May 17. Power medaled for seventh with the effort. EJ Photo/Kristi Nixon

Three times she broke her own school record, the second time assuring her spot in the Class 2A discus final, and she added a foot on her final throw for good measure for 121 feet even to finish seventh in the event.

“I knew that was one little hurdle I had to get over,” Power said, “and I pushed through it, did all my PT (physical therapy), everything I needed to do to get back because I knew track was my sport.

“(Coach said) It’s a mindset, you’re fine. Do what you need to do, you know exactly what you need to do.”

In her final two attempts, just to make sure she put an all-out effort, Power made an audible grunt to put a punctuation mark on her career. She said it was particularly gratifying to go out with three straight PRs.

“It’s amazing,” Power said. “I’m super-excited and can’t wait for what’s next.”
