Newman escapes Saints in two overtimes
MASON CITY — From the moment St. Ansgar’s Tate Mayer took the opening hand-off from scrimmage 73 yards for a score, this Class A District 2 tilt at Mason City Newman High School had the feel of a shootout.
Indeed it was as the Knights rallied from a 21-14 halftime deficit to tie the score at 29-29 after the third quarter. Following a scoreless fourth quarter that eventually sent the game to two overtimes, the home team escaped with a 45-43 win over the Saints.
In the second extra period, Newman was able to score and add the two-point conversion, getting a stop against the Saints after their touchdown.
It thwarted a fantastic game for Mayer who finished with four touchdowns, carrying the ball 18 times for 172 yards in the loss. Connor King added 100 yards on 14 attempts with a touchdown, and Mason Bissen added 88 yards on 17 carries and a short one-yard TD plunge in the first half.
