Getting her revenge
By Kristi Nixon
OSAGE — With the flip of the calendar, Osage 110-pounder Gable Hemann (30-1) made the necessary changes it took to defeat an opponent who topped her handily less than two weeks ago.
The junior, who was ranked second at 105 pounds by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association, suffered her only loss to Cedar Falls’ fifth-ranked 105-pounder Lauren Whitt during the Green Devils’ home quadrangular on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 by 16-1 technical fall.
Fast-forward to Jan. 2 of this year and it was a completely different match as Hemann won by 3-0 decision, scoring her points by a second period escape and two stalling points against Whitt in the third period for the Osage Tournament’s 110-pound title.
“I’d say my mental state, I worked on it a lot over winter break,” Hemann said, “and I wanted it this time and I knew I put in the work and just the adrenaline was high. I knew I wanted it and my work paid off.
“I think the difference was, last time I had a lot of respect for her, and I still do. I have a lot of respect, but on the mat I need to have no respect, and that’s exactly what I did today to the other day.”
