Coming into the meet ranked second, Johnston had an all-out sprint to the finish against Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Madison Brouwer to cross in 18 minutes, 51.04 seconds.

Danielle Hostetler of Mid-Prairie defended her 2A title in 18:27.23. Johnston was only two seconds behind Brouwer, earning a top-10 Class 2A all-time finish.

“I think just knowing I could do it,” Johnston said of consistently finishing under 19 minutes, “and when I did it once, I wanted to keep doing it.”

Coach Katie Mostek was happy for Johnston’s effort.

“We were hoping for top-five,” Mostek said. “There are some really great runners here…”
