OSAGE — Claudia Aschenbrenner waited to make her college decision announcement until after her high school playing career was officially over.

When it became time, she let the world know that Drake University’s volleyball program was the one for her.

“It was definitely the plan,” Aschenbrenner said. “I committed during basketball season, so it was the plan to wait until after. If I would have committed during volleyball (season), I would have done it then, but just wanted to try and wait until after basketball.”

Drake University has seen some success as of late, completing the 2022 season with a 30-8 overall record and finishing runner-up in the National Invitational Volleyball championship, the equivalent of the WNIT in basketball when a team doesn’t qualify for the NCAA tournament.

When it came to deciding on the Bulldogs, Aschenbrenner said that played a factor, but it wasn’t the only one.

“Obviously (Drake) had a lot of success last year,” she said. “Getting second in the NIVC tournament and everything, that played a big part, but also academics. I’ve always said I wanted an academic school. I wanted it to be the caliber of academics I want to be at, so definitely when Drake came into the equation, it was a perfect fit.”
