Area girls score well at Wartburg Indoor No. 2

WAVERLY — The Osage and Riceville girls track and field teams scored eighth- and 11-place finishes, respectively, at the second of three Wartburg Indoor high school meets of the season last week.

The Green Devils earned a pair of individual victories with Scarlett Byrnes claiming the 3,000-meter run as the Wildcats’ Claire Zweibohmer was a close runner-up in the event; Jacey Johnston was the other Osage winner, taking the 400-meter title with a new Iowa top-25 time in the event in 1 minute, 1.34 seconds.

Both Byrnes and Zweibohmer came back to finish fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 1,500, as Byrnes ran a PR in both distance events at 11:08.96 in the 3,000 and 5:15.77 for the 1,500.

“I think the meet at Wartburg went really well,” Osage girls coach Adam Brinkman said. “I saw a lot of improvement on a variety of things in the girls from our meet last week to this week.

“We had worked on a lot of the ‘little things’ over the last week that showed. Many of the girls also showed increased confidence in their racing as they are getting adjusted to the competition. We did have many great improvements in performances as well, including our two champions in Jacey and Scarlett.”

With the exception of a few athletes, it was the first competition of the season for Riceville.

“We had several girls competing in their first high school meet or running a specific event for the first time,” Riceville girls coach Bryan Tabbert said…
