Saints take fourth as team, smash SHR record in win

CLEAR LAKE — St. Ansgar girls track looked already in mid-season form in the last indoor meet and their only competition so far this season, showing they were the best small school at the second annual North Iowa Indoor championships hosted by Clear Lake on Thursday, March 21.
They were fourth overall, with 76.5 points, the top finish among a trio of smaller schools in attendance (Lake Mills and Central Springs were the other two).
“It’s always nice to get the first team meet under your belt,” Saint coach Phil Baldus said. “It gives us an idea of where we are after a month of hard work. This was the first meet where everybody had a chance to compete. There are always some good things and always some things that definitely need work/improvement.”
Particularly of note for Baldus’ squad was a dominant performance in the shuttle hurdle relay. The quartet of Kenzie Peterson, Brylee Wynia, Ava Falk and Aspen Falk ran to a new meet record in winning the event in 41.60 seconds.
“Aspen is a senior and a three-time state meet qualifier in the shuttle hurdle race,” Baldus said. “She knows what it takes and provides a great example of how to get ready for each race. The other hurdlers have also raced at the state meet, and they have bought in on the race preparation.”
