WATERLOO — Despite hanging with a potent Waterloo Christian offense in the first half of this Iowa Star North road game, the Riceville boys basketball team couldn’t keep the Regents down in the second half as they emerged with a 90-56 victory over the Wildcats on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

Boasting the state’s leading scorer in points with Drew Wagner, the Regents also hit seven of their 13 three-pointers in the second half to go with Wagner doing damage inside with a game-high 27 points on 12-of-14 shooting.

Waterloo Christian shot better than 55 percent from the field (35-of-63) and scored nearly as many points in the third quarter (32) as it did in the first half (34).

“Credit to them, they came out and made everything in the third quarter,” Riceville coach Matt Schwade said. “I don’t know how many threes they hit, but I can’t count that high.

“(Wagner has the) most points scored in the state, average-wise, I think he’s like in the top-five. He’s been a load, started since he was a freshman. I can’t wait for him to graduate. (He’s a senior) thank goodness. He became their all-time leading scorer (on Monday).”

Jack Adams, who was in charge of defending him, kept him to 12 in the first half, but he broke free for much more with the threes raining in.

“In the first half, I held him under his average by quite a bit,” Ja. Adams said. “but in the second half, he had some garbage points.”
