Saints roll over Newman
By Kristi Nixon
MASON CITY — Connor King wanted to make up for his miscue.
The senior running back had fumbled on his way to the end zone with the top-ranked Saints leading 7-0. It didn’t hurt St. Ansgar at all, but King wanted to do something, so on Mason City’s sustained second-half opening drive, he batted the ball out of Knight quarterback Cal McGuire’s hand for a 62-yard scoop and score in a 61-0 rout of Newman during its homecoming game on Friday, Sept. 29.
“I didn’t have the best start to the game,” King said. “I knew I had to come out, play more disciplined football, so I put a little move on the offensive tackle, got to the quarterback, got to the ball and took it to the end zone.”
Coach Drew Clevenger added, “Connor is a tough kid. He was probably thrown into deep water his sophomore year for us, seeing some action before he was ready. But, hard-nosed kid, good leader. He kind of embodies all our seniors: they are kind of no-nonsense guys who don’t really care who gets the credit. They just play hard. When they do that, good things happen.”
