A worthwhile cause makes its way to the home of the sock monkey

Osage — Judy Voaklander, Osage native, has made sock monkeys for going on twelve years, but her purpose for her creative monkey creations has morphed this year to support the Michael’s Monkeys Project.

Voaklander said she first learned about Michael’s Monkeys Project when her daughter-in-law shared an article with her about the project knowing Voaklander’s love for making sock monkeys.

According to the Michael’s Monkeys Project website, the nonprofit organization launched this spring to help children through traumatic life events. The website lays out the story of Michael and his childhood traumatic event: a car accident in which his mother was killed with him safely bucked into his car seat.

Voaklander said she read the article and thought about it for a week or two, then contacted the organization receiving an immediate welcoming response.   “I thought, I’ve got socks,” Voaklander said, “so, I pulled some out, I wash them first, then I started in.”
