Saints cap successful week at North Butler

GREENE — Four events remained in the North Butler Relays and Turkey Valley had just taken a slim one-point lead over the St. Ansgar girls’ track team.

After that, the Saints gained two top-four finishes in the 400-meter hurdles from Hali Anderson and Aspen Falk, a pair of top-five finishes in the 1,500 by Kinsey Anderson and Haley Peterson, a runner-up placing in the 4×100 and capped off the team victory with a seven-second win in the 4×400 to pull away.

St. Ansgar won 180-128.

Anderson scored a victory early in the meet in 3,000, coming away with two personal bests in both distance events.

“It was just a nice night to run,” Anderson said. “My parents told me to PR in both and I told myself all day that I was going to PR and I did it.

“I think we are getting a good roll going and I’m ready to see what we do at conference and districts.”

Cora Heeter, who anchored the Saints to a win in the 4×200 Lia Halfman, Emma Hall and Hannah Clevenger and the runner-up finish in the 4×100 along with Sarah Wagner, Jaci Woods and Halfman, said the late events was key.

“The 4×100 went good and I think the 4×400 will, too,” Heeter said. “It’s been a good week. The one on the first first curve and the second (on the 4×100) were good. The last one, we had a little bit of a rough one on our ending stretch, but we did good.”

With the Top of Iowa Conference looming, both Anderson and Heeter say that the East title will likely come down to between the Saints and Osage.

“It will be really close,” Heeter said. “I think we’re going to do good, we’ll try our best.”

Anderson added, “It could be us. We’re doing well with the power rankings right now, so I think we have a good chance.”
