Saints use free bases to top Osage
ST. ANSGAR — Despite being out-hit, the St. Ansgar baseball team used multiple walks to its advantage in an eventual 8-2 win over Top of Iowa East Conference rival Osage.
While Osage coach Mike Henson was unhappy with the strike zone, St. Ansgar coach Devin Schwiesow said he thought the umpire crew did a good job.
“When you have rivalry games like this, it always gets interesting,” Henson said. “I was just asking him to be more consistent.”
Schwiesow said, “I thought he did an okay job. There were some tough pitches and you have to battle through that. I thought our kids battled through and stayed focused. It’s tough being back there in that situation, but I thought he did a good job.
Tate Mayer went the distance, going the maximum number of pitches for a game with 110, with the game ending as Tyler Oberfoell was thrown out at third base after driving in the Green Devils’ second run on a double.
“We pushed them to the edge, they know how to compete,” Henson said. “They executed with timely hits and we couldn’t get them.”
Schwiesow said, “We knew we were going to take him long into tonight’s game. He was good, his arm felt good and felt good to go, stayed with him.”
