Saints seventh heading to final day of state golf
AMES — St. Ansgar head girls golf coach Shannon Belz vowed his Saints will play better golf on Wednesday.

The Saints were seventh out of 10 teams following the first day of the Class 1A state golf meet at Ames Golf & Country Club after play, Tuesday, June 1.

“We take a few more off tomorrow from each of them…” Belz said. “I think the front nine is a little bit easier. A little more room.

“They’ve all got shots to save, we’ll work on that this afternoon. We’ll take a break and come back and work on some things.”

A team score of 401 had St. Ansgar two strokes away from sixth place and six back of fifth, a place where the Saints spent a lot of the day hovering around.

Kirsten Boerjan started her second nine with a birdie that had her going better than her first nine, she said. She finished the day with the low score for coach Belz’s team with 43-47 — 90.

“My first nine wasn’t great,” Boerjan said. “I don’t think my drives were working well. The front nine really saved me. I started playing better and finishing my shots.

“Normally my first nine is better than my second nine, because I get tired usually. This time, I think I had a second wind or something.”

Belz said that he liked what he saw from his team.
br
“I was happy with how we started,” Belz said. “I said earlier, it looks better on paper than it did better than on the course.”

The Saints need less than 10 strokes to put them in position for fourth.

Rounding out first day team scoring for the Saints were Brooklyn Hackbart 51-50 — 101, Annika Hemann 51-52 — 103 and Grace Jahr 55-52 — 107.

“I think we need to get a lot of rest and start mentally preparing for the round tomorrow,” Boerjan said. “I think we all have goals we want to achieve and we know we can achieve them if we put our minds to it.”

Garrigan leads the team race with 342 and the overall individual leaders are tied with 77 — Madeline Streicher of Edgewood-Colesburg and Greenlee Smock of Lynnville-Sully.
