College thespians return to kick off 3rd year of summer stock theatre
Students from colleges all over the U.S. arrived in St. Ansgar last weekend to officially commence the third year of the Cedar Summerstock Theater program, in which theater students spend the summer living in the area while rehearsing and mounting four stage productions.

rThe idea originated with Nancy Lee (Nickerson), whose children studied performing arts and participated in summerstock programs on the East Coast.
r“It sparked a dream,” Lee said. “Bring this type of theatre to the Midwest.”
rWhen the new elementary school was built and the old one was left vacant, Lee saw it as a perfect opportunity to make her dream come true.
r“South Square is a perfect facility in which to rehearse, build sets, make props, and design costumes,” Lee said.
rrThe actors for the season and their roles are chosen from audition tapes they send in. This year, the casting crew had their work cut out for them.
r“We had over 100 auditions from nationally recognized colleges and universities,” Lee said. “Needless to say, our college cast and crew are top-notch.”
rThe students participating as members of the cast and crew stay with host families for the summer and spend their days rehearsing tirelessly.
r“Everyone puts in so much time and effort,” said Sterling Isler, a cast member and St. Ansgar native, “But everyone’s pulling their weight and I can already tell it’s all going to be worth it!”
rThis year’s shows include Oklahoma!, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown, and 9 to 5.
r“I’m very excited about our season lineup of shows,” Lee said.
rDates can be found on the Cedar Summerstock Theater Facebook page.
